Watershed and Native Hawaiian Plant Activities for Schools
In Class Watershed Presentation K-12: 45 min block
Tipu Tipu biologist/educator uses a watershed model for demonstration of a healthy watershed function. Topics covered include rainfall infiltration, stormwater effects, soil erosion, run off effects on nearshore coral habitat, mitigation strategies using native Hawaiian Dryland Forest plants as best management practices.
In Class Native Hawaiian Plant Activity K-12: 45 min block
Tipu Tipu biologist/educator uses seed and plant materials for in class observation and planting activities. Student activities may include seed harvesting and processing for germination. Tipu Tipu supplies seeds and plants for any activities. Soil is provided by the school, if possible.
Combination of Watershed Presentation and Native Hawaiian Plant Activity K-12: 1.5-2 hour block
Combines both the In Class Watershed presentation and the native Hawaiian plant activity. This combines presentation 1 and 2 and can accommodate an inground planting in school garden area. Soil is provided by the school, if possible.
Field trip opportunities for classrooms K-12:
Tipu Tipu biologist/educator and Tipu Tipu staff will host classrooms at our worksite locations: Seed Farm/Nursery at Maalaea, Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge, and Wahikuli Watershed Dryland Forest Restoration, which is only accessible by 4×4.
- Seed Farm/Nursery – Participants will help with invasive species removal, transplanting, propagation, seed collecting and other watershed restoration activities.
- Kealia Pond – Participants will help with invasive species removal, transplanting, propagation, seed collecting and other watershed and grassland restoration activities.
- Wahikuli Watershed Dryland Forest Restoration – Participants will access field site in 4×4 vehicles (school arranged) to help maintain and plant the dryland forest in Wahikuli above Lahaina, West Maui.
Volunteer Service Opportunities for High School and College students:
Tipu Tipu has weekday and weekend volunteer opportunities for high-school students at the nursery and at restoration site locations. Students should contact us for the next volunteer opportunity.
